Kāpiti Coast Grey Power 2025 Local Body Election Candidate - Paraparaumu Candiate Glen Olsen response
As a local ratepayer, I understand the importance of responsible spending and
sustainable rates.
Born and raised in Paraparaumu. I live here with my wife and our primary school-
aged children, close to my retired mother, providing me with a fundamental
understanding of the diverse needs of our community.
I hold a Master's Degree in Leadership and Sustainability, own a local business, and
the current Chair of the Paraparaumu Community Board. I bring valuable
governance experience, believe in strong community advocacy, practical solutions,
and a collaborative approach to shaping a thriving, connected, and affordable
Paraparaumu.
In Kapiti, we need better access to general doctors, urgent care, specialists, and
aged care. People should not have to wait months or travel far for essential services.
Council's role is to advocate strongly to health authorities, work with providers, and
plan infrastructure that sustains quality healthcare close to home for all ages.
Ratepayers cannot fund affordable housing, but Council can work with central
government, iwi, and community housing providers, while encouraging private
developers to include affordable housing in larger developments. Removing
unnecessary barriers will help projects move ahead faster.
Rates have become a genuine anxiety for many in Kapiti. We must focus on
essential services and core infrastructure, while cutting unnecessary spending.
Prudent planning and clear priorities are key to limiting future increases.
Affordable or free public transport at all times will help keep seniors connected and
independent. We also need safer pedestrian crossings, suitable footpaths, more
covered bus shelters, accessible and reliable buses, and well-maintained roads for
all users.
Kapiti's older residents are a vital part of our community. Council must ensure they
are involved in decisions, improve public space accessibility, support transport
options that work for them, and strengthen community participation and connection.
Our Community, Our Voice, Let's be heard!
